SCHOOLS ARE supposed to be doing their bit to promote lifelong learning. But sometimes they go too far.

In Bulgaria, a 102-year-old widow was told by local council officials that she would be starting primary school next month.

Stephania Marien was shocked when a letter arrived saying that her parents should be making arrangements for her to start school in the coming academic year.

“The letter said that I should get ready to start school soon,” she said. “I thought, going back to school? No way!”

She contacted the authorities, who admitted their mistake.

Pensioners in England may not have such a lucky escape. Ivan Lewis, the minister responsible for the elderly, has proposed that every school should invite older people in to help pupils with their reading. It’s only a matter of time before full-time attendance is required.
