In response to George Bethell’s letter regarding Cambridge University’s use of the A* grade to select applicants (“A*s in a tombola”, March 27): this is nothing new. Cambridge already requires students to achieve a 90 per cent pass rate, which is the threshold for the new A* grade. It is merely formalising and making public - disingenuously perhaps - what it already does. So in terms of how Cambridge selects its undergraduates, the A* will really make no difference at all.
