Meanwhile, the North East Books Award for teenage fiction, judged by secondary pupils in 21 schools, has gone to Blinded by the Light. The novel, about a boy’s struggle with a cult, was written by Sherry Ashworth, who teaches English at Bury grammar school, Lancashire.
