Three government initiatives to help pupils in disadvantaged areas are having an inconsistent impact on achievement, according to inspectors. The Office for Standards in Education said Education Action Zones, City Learning Centres and Excellence Clusters were producing promising work but their impact had been uneven. The watchdog called for better monitoring and evaluation of the schemes. www.ofsted.gov.uk
