“Robots and Revelations” is the theme of the Design and Technology with ICT Education Show taking place at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, November 18-20. The UK Robotic Games arena will stage clashes between featherweight fighting robots weighing 12kg, demonstrations of 100kg heavyweight robots from TV’s Robot Wars and a display of schools’

robotic projects. Products on display will cover resistant materials, electronics, CADCAM, food technology, graphics, engineering, examinations, systems and control, and textiles technology. An Under Wraps area will showcase products that have been on the market less than 18 months and there is an extensive programme of free seminars.

In an attempt to attract more young people to careers in electronics and communications technology, the Marconi ECT Project, managed by the Design and Technology Association, is aiming to train 100 accredited trainers across the country. They in turn will organise and run ECT courses in their areas. A website has been developed to support teachers and pupils and a new GCSE in ECT is being developed in association with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

The design secrets of many magical shows are revealed in 2D

3D: Design for Theatre and Performance, an exhibition at the Theatre Museum, 1E Tavistock Street, London WC2. Organised by the Society of British Theatre Designers, it has been on tour nationally and won the top international award and two gold medals at the 2003 Prague Quadrennial.

Set, costume and lighting designs are included for 30 stunning productions ranging from classic and contemporary plays to opera, musicals and children’s favourites. Exhibits by 25 leading designers include stage models, computer visualisations, puppets, masks, props, storyboards and photographs. There is an accompanying programme of primary and secondary workshops.
