The RE Today arm of the Christian Education Movement is running a conference on “Excellence and enjoyment: a strategy for RE in the primary school” in the St Albans area, June 7. Organised in collaboration with St Albans Anglican Diocese, it is aimed at heads and RE co-ordinators.
RE Today courses include: “Help! I’m the RE co-ordinator!”, Manchester, June 30; and a secondary course on “A framework for assessment”, Birmingham, May 12 and Sheffield, May 9. The findings of a project linking schools with a mostly Muslim population to those with few Muslim pupils will be reported at a conference in Bradford on September 27. The “Respect for all in RE” project is being run by the Association of RE Inspectors (AREAIC) and the Professional Council for RE. Funded by the DfES, the project explores: how RE contributes to attitudes of tolerance and respect; practical classroom approaches to dialogue and inter-faith issues in RE; ICT links; and policy guidance on RE, citizenship and attitudinal development. Members of the Association of RE Inspectors are invited to a 16-19 students’ day at Coventry Cathedral on June 27 as observers. The aim of the project, “Dare to Engage: good practice in 16-19 RE for all”, which is funded by the Jerusalem Trust, is to disseminate good practice in running 16-19 conferences. Speaker Professor John Hull will ask: is the body more important than the soul? Why is the body beautiful - and ugly? Is our culture a body-worshipping society? Does God have a body? Competition. For its Art in Heaven competition, the Professional Council for RE invites pupils aged five to 18 from mainstream and special schools to create artwork on one of four themes and submit it by June 30. Themes include “Where is God?” and “A day to remember”, and the use of ICT is encouraged. The competition is sponsored by the Westhill Trust.
