“Engaging maths, engaging minds: connecting teaching and learning in primary maths” is the theme of the BEAM conference in London, June 20; Leeds, June 27; Bristol, June 30. Speakers: Professor Mike Askew, chair in maths education, King’s College London; and Dr Sue Gifford, Roehampton University. Topics include: links between thinking skills and mathematical thinking; contexts and stories to engage children’s thinking; and how to effect change in maths teaching in your school or local authority. The Mathematical Association is running a secondary conference at Stirling University, September 9. Key speaker: Professor Adam McBride, Strathclyde University. Workshops include: calculus - the first 2,000 years; mind mapping in the maths classroom; patterns, proofs and connections; problem-solving using puzzles; early presentation in S3 using Higher Still courses; preparation for standard grade exams; raising attainment in advanced higher maths; creating interactive classroom resources with Excel.
