Civil servants responsible for ensuring that children learn to read and write have been accused of crimes against the English language. Playwright Simon Gray and poet Anthony Thwaite awarded “nul” points to the prose in a Department for Education and Skills guide to teaching English to teenagers.

Biographer Selina Hastings gave it 30 per cent.
