We have just survived that auspicious day of the sixth day of the sixth month of 2006, otherwise rendered as 666 - the mark of Satan. But for Ronnie Smith, general-secretary of the EIS, the number seven has more unfortunate connotations. The morning after his beloved Livingston FC lost 7-0 against Hibs, he was greeted by the office caretaker whistling the theme tune to The Magnificent Seven; glasses for that morning’s meeting had been laid out to form the number seven; Ken Wimbor, EIS assistant secretary, had left a can of 7-Up on his chair and he was informed that the morning’s meeting had been moved to committee room No 7.
