Number of unqualified teachers working in UK schools has leapt 500 per cent

* Research published by recruitment agency Select Education this week showed that the number of unqualified teachers working in UK schools has leapt 500 per cent since 1997.

The survey, based on DfES data, showed that the number of overseas-trained teachers and instructors without qualified teacher status had risen from 2,500 to 12,300.

The DfES said just 4 per cent of teachers were not qualified.
