Rolling strike action over low pay has been ruled out by the NUT executive, although members in England and Wales voted in favour of a walk-out this week, writes Nicola Porter.

The teaching union’s ballot showed 51.72 per cent agreed with strike action but the turnout of 29.7 per cent there appeared to be a lack of appetite for a militant stand.

Christine Blower, acting general secretary for the NUT, said: “Colleagues continue to feel that pay levels or teachers are too low, which means the case for fair pay has not gone away.”

Teachers went out of strike over pay after a ballot in April. In Wales around 1,730 schools were closed, mostly in Cardiff, Newport and Vale of Glamorgan, where there is higher NUT membership.
