University lecturers in the Educational Institute of Scotland have voted overwhelmingly to reject the employers’ 2.5 per cent pay offer for 1996-97 and to continue their campaign through industrial action. As part of the same ballot, 71 per cent of lecturers support strikes in universities. Staff are facing an offer “which barely matches inflation, together with a significant worsening in working conditions,” Ronnie Smith, EIS general secretary, commented.
