OFSTED gives union coffee break

THE Office for Standards in Education has demonstrated its new light touch by inviting the Association of Teachers and Lecturers to Saturday morning coffee and biscuits. Maggie Smith, director of the early years' directorate, met the union's foundation stage committee last week and discussed issues such as the lack of career structure for people working in the early years sector. Gwen Evans, deputy general secretary of ATL, said:

"It was exemplary, new-style Ofsted and unionism in the 21st century."
