More than one academy per week has been moved to be run by a different trust or sponsor over the past 12 months because they were found to be under-performing.

Department for Education statistics show that the responsibility for 66 academies was moved over the past year.

Meanwhile, regional schools commissioners who act on behalf of the education secretary to improve under-performing schools issued 50 academies with a formal warning notice.

The fact that regional schools commissioners formally intervened in the running of 116 academies and free schools in recent months is likely to renew concerns about the Government’s ambition to convert all schools to academy status.

The statistics were published in response to a written parliamentary question from Labour former frontbencher Maria Eagle.

They show that the South West region of England saw the highest number of academies moved to a different trust or sponsor with 21.

The East Midlands and Humber region was just behind with 18.

The region with the highest number of formal warning notices issued was North West London and South Central with 14.
