Shetland teachers, if they choose to holiday away from the islands, tend to pour their energies into their summer holiday, as it is not really practical time-wise or financially to go on lots of weekend breaks, says the headteacher of Skerries School in Shetland.
My husband and I like to go to Cornwall, where we have friends. We have to fly to mainland Scotland, then on to Gatwick and then to Newquay. We leave at about 6.30am and arrive at 2.30pm.
I suppose Cornwall is like a warm Shetland without the wind: it gets the same amount of rain. We’ve been to other places, such as Italy and Morocco, but they’re too hot for us in the summer.
It’s a very relaxing holiday. There is an open-air theatre, the Minack, on the cliffs at Porthcurno, near Land’s End, which does all sorts of productions. This year we have tickets to see The Madness of George III.
