Richard Cairns, the energetic head of Brighton College, has had a particularly busy GCSE week.

Press release 1: “Leading Headmaster calls for schools to cut the GCSE burden,” it begins. “League tables based on point scores are encouraging Heads to enter pupils for exam after exam quite unnecessarily.” Bravo, Mr Cairns. But what does his next press release say? “One of those receiving their GCSE results today is Holly Colvin aged 16 from Brighton College.

Holly secured 13 top grades in all: 10 A*s in her GCSEs and a further three As in AS exams taken a year early.”
