Senior teachers should automatically progress up the pay scale unless their employer can demonstrate substantial failings, say the National Union of Teachers.

The union is against new guidelines given by the pay rewards group RIG (comprising the Government and other unions), which call for senior teachers to prove that they have achieved certain standards before they progress. The new performance management regime comes into force in September next year.
