Two documentaries highlighting the experiences of gay teenagers are due to be broadcast on Channel 4.

My Big Gay Prom follows a group as they attempt to run the UK’s first San Francisco-style gay prom party for under-18s. One girl, Sam, said most headteachers seemed reluctant to publicise local gay youth societies and events. Her friend Zak was banned from bringing his partner to an end-of-year party.

They clubbed together with three friends to organise the event to give gay teenagers the right to dance, flirt and snog without being stared at.

The team were mentored by entrepreneur Ivan Massow, who said: “I want them to be role models. To show other kids struggling with their sexuality that it’s okay.”

Another programme, Coming Out in Class, examines the experiences of gay pupils at school. It is presented by the country’s first openly gay rapper, QBoy.
