You can always rely on Duncan Ferguson for a bon mot or three, and he did not disappoint at last week’s languages conference hosted by the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The heidie of Plockton High and champion of Gaelic piped up: “I always remind my students that when they are 24 and at a party in Mexico, they will need Spanish to communicate, Gaelic for a song, English if they lose their passport and a shinty stick in case there’s any trouble.”
