Palm Friday

Palmist Robin Lown reckons he can judge teachers - and others who use their hands for their work - by their palms. We let him read between the lines A slightly oblong hand with emotional pockets, fine lines and skin pattern adds up to a caring paternal type with a love of good living and good food. A strong feminine, receptive nature - sympathetic yet shrewd.

A high index finger shows resourcefulness and the ability to lead and organise well, but he can be moody and snappy when things go wrong. With a charming, friendly, outgoing manner, he is well suited to working co-operatively, particularly with women. However, he can be hypersensitive and self-pitying when criticised.

The full thumb ball shows energy and the ability to get the best out of others, especially children. He has natural teaching tendencies and an over-active imagination. He avoids romantic attachments and is over-concerned with the accumulation of wealth.

He tends to leave things half-finished and then has too much on the go at once. His indolent streak is tempered by deadlines and promises to othersI he hates to break them. He ought to be a chat-show host or editor of a very visual magazine.

Clear, strong heart and head lines show emotional and mental toughness and a level-headed attitude. The head line shows a creative, critical writing ablity. This man likes to manage his own projects and doesn’t suffer fools or poor organisation. He gives of his best when working on his own The life line start shows a strong web of family commitments, with cousins being close and influential. Personal relationships figure highly around 26 to 29. The career line shows varied occupations, a late start in secure earnings and an expansive breaking-out phase in his late thirties.

Harvey McGavin is a TES reporter who has helped compile the Palm Friday series I was sceptical when we started, but some readings have been spookily accurate. So I decided to put Robin to the test. He didn’t know this was my palm, we have never met and only ever had a few brief, non-personal chats on the phone.

I don’t avoid romantic attachments (I’m married), I never see my cousins (family fall-out) and I wouldn’t say I was naturally charming, friendly or outgoing, but apart from that it’s all true.

I am paternal (I’ve got two kids), I love food and I think I am sympathetic, but I can be moody, impatient and indolent. I work well on my own. I taught for a couple of years, have done other jobs too, and obviously I am a reporter now. I never had much money until my thirties - and I started going out with the woman I am now married to when I was 26.
