Parents fear a new Aberfan

At least 10 children could be withdrawn from a primary school near Neath if National Grid blasts rock nearby to lay a gas pipeline.

NG wants to use high explosives in a geologically unstable area. Several properties in Trebanos have been pulled down because of subsidence, including part of 130-pupil Ysgol Trebannws. Locals fear vibration from blasting could trigger an Aberfan-style disaster. The Department for Trade and Industry will report soon on whether it can go ahead.

Parents, like Rachel Evans, who intends moving Chloe, five, and Thomas, four, have pressed Neath Port Talbot council for an independent report. A spokesman said engineers believed the work would “not affect the landslip area”.
