Parents' sadness

The parents of a boy killed on a school skiing trip to Austria have said they do not blame the school. Hayley and Gary Waller, whose son Hayden (above) was killed after plunging down a ravine, said they were confident the Howard School in Rainham, Kent, had done everything "by the book".

The 12-year-old was walking in a wood when he fell down a 30ft drop as he tried to help another boy who had lost his footing.

Hayden was among a group of four boys who had gone into the wood during a period of free time on Monday afternoon. They had not told teachers they were going. The Howard School has visited the resort of Mallnitz for 20 years without incident.
