PITY the Professional Association of Teachers - ignored for most of the year except for their charmingly barmy summer conference (dogs as classroom assistants - remember that one?); declining membership (allegedly, m’lud); and now it seems they’ve even lost the use of their own name.

In a demonstration of justwhat the Government thinks of this tamest of associations, the Government’s social exclusion unit has set up a whole series of Policy Action Teams, cheerfully bandying around the name PAT in all its reports.

Whatever next? A National Unemployment Taskforce? SchoolHome Agreements? Where will it end?
