The mood was one of defiance as lecturers’ union NATFHE held its conference in Scarborough. Francis Beckett reports

* Paul Mackney launched an impromptu attack on the Association of Teachers and Lecturers for describing the NATFHE one-day strike as “premature”.

“Actually, any industrial action is premature for the ATL. Because of its supine contribution, when it was known as the Assistant Masters and Mistresses Association, or AMMA, we thought it meant Amma gonna do nothing for my pay rise again this year?”
