I see that the debate on salary awards (TES, January 10) has reached a new low. Walter Ulrich, of the National Association of Governors and Managers, talks about heads sulking if they do not receive pay increases from their governors and alleges that his governing body members are “giving heads and deputies salary increases merely to have an easy life”.
Both allegations are insulting, as is the statement by Peter Smith of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers that “some heads are exercising patronage in the direction of their own bank accounts”.
Mr Ulrich and Mr Smith are completely wide of the mark. It is worth recalling that many heads are still paid at the assimilation points that existed in 1991.
