The Times. Could software usurp teachers’ role?
TEACHERS, well aware that they are employed primarily to squash outbursts of free
expression and enforce meaningless rules, will realise very early on in their training that, in these areas, they have been superseded by software.
Computers like teachers, will not be answered back. Take the phrase “mean old Russian”. My computer quibbles with the non-capitalisation of “old” it insists on “mean Old Russian”. It will not listen to reason. It is convinced I have a point to make about the stinginess of that particular dead language, as opposed to, say, Sanskrit, which always got its round in.
