THE National Deaf Children’s Society has appointed Gwen Carr, head of sensory services for Stockport for 11 years, to the newly created post of director, UK services. Ms Carr has taught in mainstream schools, hearing impairment units and special schools for deaf children.
She is an education adviser to the newborn hearing screening programme which ensures that babies are checked for deafness within weeks of birth, and a member of Manchester University’s advisory committee on the training of teachers of the deaf.
London University’s Institute of Education has honoured Brian Simon, a former student, by creating in its centenary year, a chair of history of education in his name.
He was emeritus professor of education at Leicester University until his death in 2002 and gained his teaching diploma from the Institute in 1938.
An advocate of comprehensive schooling, campaigner for the end of intelligence testing and political activist, he was, according to Richard Aldrich, the current chair of history of education, “the most famous historian of education of his generation”. Gary McCulloch from Sheffield University will become the first Brian Simon chair in September 2003, following the retirement of Professor Aldrich.
