The Institute of Education, University of London, has made the following professorial appointments: Professor Michael Barber, Keele University, and Alison Wolf, Institute of Education, to chairs of education; Dr Brahm Norwich, Institute of Education, to the chair in special needs education; and Professor Peter Aggleton has transferred from Goldsmiths' College to the Health Education Research Unit.

Douglas Marr, formerly rector of St Machar Academy, Aberdeen, will become rector of Banchory Academy, Kincardineshire, from August 22. He replaces Stewart Wilson, who has retired.

Michael Olin, employee development strategy manager at Royal Mail, has joined Understanding British Industry as development director (careers education and guidance) on a two-year secondment.

Suzanne Spicer, education officer at Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, Telford, Shropshire, has won a Winston Churchill Fellowship to study the use of multi-media for educational purposes in prestigious American museums such as the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

David Standfast, aged 61, an adult education student at Henry Thornton Centre, Clapham, London SW4 won an award during National Adult Learners' Week (May 15-19). His prize includes a residental weekend studying art, a framed certificate and a Pounds 100 voucher.
