inspirational football Steven Gerrard has topped a children’s poll of celebrities they would most like to see be their teacher.

The Liverpool captain trounced sporting stars such as David Beckham and Wayne Rooney in the BT sponsored survey. The 7- to 11-year-olds thought, unsurprisingly, he would make a good role model and top-notch PE coach.

Pupils wanted to let Peter Andre loose on the blackboard too because he is “clever” and Katie Price because she could provide shopping tips. Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein also got a look-in, because they could “answer every question”.

Pupils would like to see teachers with extendable arms, X-ray vision to catch out bullies and beards. In real life, kind and funny teachers with talents in puppetry and singing, and a capacious biscuit barrel, won the day. However, one child wanted teachers to be “dumb” so the class would always be right.
