Gethin Jones is already an expert in sticky-backed plastic and ingenious inventions using toilet roll tubes. Now the former Blue Peter presenter is turning his attention to more technical constructions: environmentally friendly schools.

Gethin (below) is joining two athletes from the Beijing Olympics in judging the inaugural EDF Energy awards for greener schools.

The presenter, who also impressed viewers with his foxtrot and rumba in Strictly Come Dancing, will work with Louis Smith, the first British gymnast to bring home an individual medal - bronze - from the Olympics in 100 years, and Liz Johnson, the 100 metre breast stroke champion at the Paralympics.

The awards, to be decided in June next year, will go to schools that have made significant changes to their energy and water use.

Six national award winners will each receive Pounds 5,000 to help their school become even more environmentally friendly. The closing date for entries is February 25.

“I can’t wait to judge the entries and work together with our inspirational Olympians,” said Gethin, who went to school at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf (Glantaf Welsh Comprehensive) in Cardiff, where he was a keen musician and rugby player. “Today’s school children are the ultimate ambassadors for the future and it will be great to reward those who are making a real difference,” he added.
