Kate Heasman, lecturer in English at Arnold and Carlton College, Nottingham, has been appointed vice-president of NATFHE, the university and college lecturers' union, and will become president in May 1996. Vicky Seddon, senior lecturer in student services, Sheffield Hallam University, has been elected honorary treasurer for the fifth time.

Vanessa Potter, chair of the British Youth Council, was elected president of the Youth Forum of the European Union at its recent general assembly in Paris. She is the first UK president and, at 25, the youngest person to have held the position.

Paul Atkins, formerly deputy head of Saxon Mount special school, Hastings, Sussex, has been appointed head of Uplands special school, Brighton, replacing Bob Upward who has retired after 20 years in the post.
