Christine Gilbert, formerly director of education services for Harrow, is now corporate director (education) at Tower Hamlets. She replaces Anne Sofer who has retired.

Nicholas Johnson, a housemaster at Aiglon College, a co-educational boarding school in the Swiss Alps, has been appointed head of Bolitho School, Polwithen, Penzance, Cornwall. He replaces Ian Halford, who has retired after 11 years in the post.Julian Bowden, a barrister and management and training consultant for the Criminal Justice System, has been appointed to the Association of Accounting Technicians, the education and training body, as assistant secretary, professional. He will head the membership division. Westonbirt School, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, has awarded scholarships for all-round ability and excellence in particular subjects for the academic year 1997-98 to: Narisa Cherdjareewatananun, Westonbirt; Alice Collinson, Beaudesert Park, Minchinhampton; Hannah Ewan, New Hall, Chelmsford; Annabel Jenkin, Rose Hill, Hillesley; and Emily Stephenson, Hopelands, Stonehouse. Exhibitions go to: Rosie Clarkson, Beaudesert Park; and Antonia Hall, Westonbirt.Elizabeth Choulerton (17), formerly of Bath High School, is taking over from Tom Boyce as head prefect of King Edward’s Independent School, Bath, the first female student in 445 years of the school’s history to hold that office.
