If Toby Young had not spent so much of his article attacking Fiona Millar (our chair, incidentally, not vice-chair) and William Ellis School, he might have been able to tell us more about his plans - for example, about the admission policies of his school.

Will he give preference to the children of the school’s founders? Will he adopt the oversubscription criteria of the community schools? Would he let the local authority handle admissions? How does he answer the concern that, at the time of reduced funding, creating surplus places will drain away funds from other schools? Perhaps, too, he might have been honest enough to mention that the setting up of the Swedish “free schools” has led to more social segregation.

Margaret Tulloch, Secretary, Comprehensive Future, London.
