Peter Peacock was star turn at the Scottish Executive conference in Edinburgh (page one). Theme: what wonderful things we’re doing and want to do more of, if only you lot out there would go that extra mile (we paraphrase).

The ambitious, excellent minister took more than a passing interest in the interactive introductory session, complete with handsets and technical wizardry.

Only 15 per cent of the audience thought their schools were ambitious, excellent and recognised for it. About 30 per cent thought they were ambitious and excellent and not recognised, and 25 per cent thought their school was ambitious but not excellent.

The bearded one couldn’t resist. “For those not excellent or ambitious, there are a bundle of P45s at the back.”

Only joking.
