Miriam Gross’s report, “Why can’t they read?” received a lot of publicity, so I read it (“The Week”, July 23). Hidden beneath the diatribe is some sense about the effectiveness of synthetic phonics teaching. I share Ms Gross’s hunch, but since when did hunch and hyperbole become the basis for policy debate?
