Places of peace

If you're looking for somewhere to get away from it all, The Good Retreat Guide by Stafford Whiteaker (Rider, pound;12.99) is a good starting point.

Useful websites www.retreat-co.co.uk - gives details of various retreats at home and overseas (including Tuscany, above) offering ayurveda, yoga, cycling, walking and other activities;www.retreatsonline.comukengland (or scotland or wales) - an international site with a UK component;www.metta.org.uk - for all things alternative. Metta is Sanksrit for "loving kindness". There's even a "jokes" section, which prompts calm, whimsical smiles rather than belly-laughs.
