Poetry and architecture may seem like an unusual combination but the organisers of a writing competition for P3s to S4s, the Scottish Poetry Library and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, hope to make children more aware of their built environment and encourage them to create exciting poetry.
Home is the theme of Poet in the House, the first of hopefully five annual competitions.
Two winning poems (from P3-P7s and S1-S4s) will be printed on posters and distributed to every school in Scotland and a poet and visual artist will lead creative writing workshops in the winners’ schools. Also, the winners will be invited to join the judging for next year’s competition.
A free pack for teachers includes a ready-to-go lesson plan, six new poems about homes by Scottish poets and large photo flashcards featuring a range of housing.
