Sonia Case (TES, May 28) attacks the use of the poem Spinner in the key stage 2 test this year. The expectations of the national curriculum are clear: all children should be taught the range of texts given in the programme of study, includng poetry.
Ms Case rightly points out that children should study texts which reflect their cultural diversity, but this does not mean that they should be offered a diet which only reflects their own situation. Surely one of the most powerful effects of literature is to extend understanding and experience?
