DAVID Ogle’s piece (TES Friday magazine, June 7) about teachers who let fly expletives in school misses the point.

If words like “bugger” and “fuck” are socially unacceptable, then they should be equally taboo both for adults, even when alone, and for children. To rebuke children for using them and then to use them ourselves completely undermines any educative purpose in our rebuke, merely suggesting that children need to wait until they are older before they start being offensive. Self-discipline is a lesson that we all need to learn.
