* I can well understand religious leaders being disturbed by The National Theatre’s production of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials (TES, October 31), but which play worth its salt doesn’t challenge and provoke our cosy view of the world?

Theatres are oases of free speech and culture, and the more exposure pupils have to them the better. This is especially important for sixth-formers, most of whom drop drama and English literature after GCSE.
