* I well remember working with the (initial teaching alphabet (ITA), in the early 1970s, and I can reassure Lord Adonis, the education minister, that synthetic phonics have been alive and blending ("oa", "ea" and so on) before and since then. Surely we are not re-visiting the roundabout?
