So the Cognitive Abilities Test consumes a week in Year 7 and contributes to a lost year of secondary education, does it? (TES, July 12).

A whole cohort can take the test in three sittings of an hour each. Schools that use the test know this - those who do not should not be misled. CAT gives teachers valuable insight into pupils’ ability to think and an indication of how they might perform in exams in later years. That might just be three hours well spent!
