“Crisis? What crisis?” (TES Friday, October 18) was a good article - coverage of teacher unemployment is long overdue in The TES.
You might have included, however, the number of teachers registered as unemployed with the Department for Work and Pensions. The Independent, in an article two years ago, gave the figure as over 16,000. But, there are many more unemployed and receiving benefit. Since Jobseekers’ Allowance stops for most people after six months, they are no longer counted. Then there are those - as in your article - who are doing other jobs, but would prefer to work as teachers.
