STEPHEN Timms’ declaration (TES, May 17) that it is “total nonsense to suggest that teaching to the tests accounts for the rise in results”, defies any logical assessment of the real scenario. Is he aware that many schools now spend much of the year preparing to answer the test questions?

He may well be “immensely proud” of teachers who have responded to the Government’s “challenge”, but many educationists are unhappy with his Government’s diktats and question the improvements which he is eager to proclaim.

Why are so many experienced and creative teachers leaving the profession, Mr Timms?
