I have a few points in response to GH Moses’s letter on music remaining elite (TES, October 29). From the 1960s, when I was at school, to the present, it is middle-class children who come to school carrying violin cases ready for private tuition. I was never offered the chance nor would my family have been able to afford it.
Now, at the age of 57, I play the violin because I can afford to. By denying access to those pupils whose families cannot, we fail to realise pupils’ full potential - the same goes for drama and sport.
Lottery money should be made available for teachers to spot potential talent and nurture it. Access to the Royal College and Academy would therefore be further widened to include the latent talent out there.
