A Fife teacher has been given a national award for his ability to enthuse pupils in science. Martin Cunningham, principal teacher of physics at Kirkcaldy High, was described by judges as bringing physics concepts alive with bright, colourful written materials and demonstrations.
Mr Cunning-ham, pictured, whose imitation of a helium “pop” is famous at the school, was presented with his Teacher of Physics Award at the Institute of Physics Awards dinner at the Savoy in London in January.
The accolade also recognises the time he spends at lunchtime and after school helping pupils revise, prepare for assessment, or simply talking to them about the subject.
Mr Cunningham received one of five awards presented this year. Each year, the institute holds the ceremony to celebrate teachers seen as having raised the status of physics through outstanding practice in the classroom.
