TEACHERS are not convinced they will receive adequate training in time to meet the Government’s deadlines for introducing the Higher Still post-16 reforms. Announcements about extra funding have not eased classrooms concerns, Fred Forrester, the Educational Institute of Scotland’s depute general secretary, told members in Skye.
The union is due to meet Helen Liddell, the Education Minister, next Wednesday to underline its anxieties about the programme which the EIS says is now “seriously at risk”. Mr Forrester said not enough had been done to deliver courses successfully and is confident of strong support for a boycott from mid-November.
He said: “Schools and colleges cannot afford essential materials. Inadequate arrangements for the new Higher in 1999 would mean that many thousands of students will lose out. Teachers and parents are simply not prepared to see this generation of school and college students suffer.”
Mr Forrester called on the Government to act “quickly, decisively and clearly”.
