I am intrigued by the suggestion that the process of assessing the threshold payments will be speeded up by giving the external assessors a pay rise of nearly 30 per cent (TES, February 23). Will they work more quickly if they are paid more? Are they deliberately working slowly becausethey want more? Or is it that the extra money will attract more potential assessors to assess three threshold applications for a fee of pound;342?

Can anyone think of a better way of spending pound;750,000?
