THE DISCLOSURE that a former chief inspector of prisons played a major role in engineering the schools inspection regime (TES, October 15) will come as no surprise to Nikolai Gogol fans.

“If you like”, says the mayor to the government inspector,“we can go from here to the district school to study our teaching methods. From there to the police station and town prison to see how we deal with criminals”.
