Postscript;Letter

I CAN'T be the only English teacher appalled by the proposals for A-level English literature.

Why closed texts? Do we still think that remembering quotes is virtuous? Why only one Shakespeare play? And why an obsession with "cultural context" and other people's "critical opinions"?

These developments will militate against all but the most able students. I would like to know who we have to thank for destroying the open tradition of A-level literary studies. I would also like to know which sixth-form teachers were consulted.
